    • March Room 102 News

      Dear Parents:

March will be a busy month.  Even though we are looking forward to Easter and our spring break, we have lots to accomplish in our daily activities.

In March our themes will be centered on the letters Z, C, G, and A as well as the season of Lent and Easter, Passover, and St. Patrick’s Day.

Letter Z will be all about the zoo.  We will make shape tigers in the art center, create our own zoo in the sensory table, and dictate and draw descriptions of our favorite zoo animals.

We will make beautiful salt crystals in science for letter C, make clowns in the art center, dramatize circus acts, and begin to learn that certain letters have two sounds.

Letter G is always great fun.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate, and we will go outside to watch what happens when a geyser erupts.  We will put Mentos candies into diet coke and see how high our geysers will shoot into the air.  I always run out of coke before the children run out of enthusiasm for the activity.

Letter A begins our study of vowels.   Vowels are a harder concept for the children.  Not only do they have two sounds, but more often fall in the middle of words and help us learn to read.  We will design and fly airplanes during our science activity and make alphabet trees in the art center (Chicka, Chicka, Boom Boom).

On St. Patrick’s Day, we will dress in green and learn about shamrocks, leprechauns, and the folklore behind them.  We will listen and watch very carefully and maybe our little leprechaun will perform some magic.  We hope he leaves us some special, lucky shamrock coins.  We’re also looking forward to our very own Mr. McNamara (Eoin’s dad) paying us a visit.  It’s always great to have a true Irishman in our midst.  We will also celebrate with a special snack.

We have begun the Godly Play Faces of Jesus stories for Lent and will also pray the Stations of the Cross found on all the classroom doors throughout the month.  This will lead us to the religious and traditional celebrations of Easter and Passover.  We will discuss the true meaning of the holidays as well as taste matzos, hunt for Easter eggs, and decorate baskets and crosses.

In math we will continue to work on number skills.  I plan to introduce Touch Math as a hands on means of learning simple addition skills.

Please continue to work on your “Flat Child” (Flat Stanley) travel log during the spring vacation.  This is a good time to be out and about and share some adventures far and near to home.

In March we will celebrate Ms. Desmond’s birthday.  The children have already been giving me quite a list of suggestions of what I should bring for a treat.  When we change the calendar, everyone always looks to see whose birthday is coming next.
