Summer Reading List
Incoming 5th Graders
All 5th graders should read a total of 2 books this summer (at least!) and complete one project based on a book.
Please choose one of the following books by Jean Fritz to read.
Shh! We’re Writing the Constitution by Jean Fritz
Will You Sign Here, John Hancock? by Jean Fritz
Where was Patrick Henry on the 29th of May? by Jean Fritz
Can’t You Make Them Behave, King George? by Jean Fritz
Then choose 1 of the following 4 books to read as well.
A Long Way From Chicago by Richard Peck
Quake! Disaster in San Francisco, 1906 By Gail Langer Karwoski
Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink
My Teacher is an Alien by Bruce Coville
On the first day of school, please bring a list of the 2 books that you read (along with any additional books). Also, bring a project that you have completed for one of the books. Options are listed on the back of this sheet.
Project Options:
- Write an epilogue to the book. This is a short section (chapter length) at the end of the book which explains the future of the characters. What happens to the characters after the story ends? You may also illustrate.
- Write an alternate ending to the book. Did you think the book should have ended a different way? Can you think of a more interesting ending? Write a new ending chapter to the book. You may also illustrate.
- Design a “Question Box” containing questions and answers from the book. The Question Box should be decorated with scenes or characters from the book. The question box should contain at least 15 questions with answers on the back.
- Design and write a front page newspaper article on an important event in the story. Your article should clearly explain what happened in the event and should contain a picture and caption. Make sure the newspaper is set in the place and time period of your story.
- Write a review and tape yourself reading! Tape-record yourself reading a chapter of the book that would capture other students’ interest. Read with expression so that other students in your class can enjoy listening to it. You must also write a review of the book. Write one-page telling me what you liked and/or didn’t like about the book. Also give it a star rating (1 star being the worst rating, and 5 stars being the best rating).
Projects are due on the first day of school.
Email me at ms.hansen@values4life.com if you have questions.
Looking forward to a fun year in 5th grade! Have a great summer and enjoy the reading!
