Prayer Partners make brownies for the homeless,

    Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for all your help and support throughout the school year.  I greatly appreciated it.  Also, thank you for sharing your children with me.  I was blessed to have such a terrific group of children.  I really enjoyed this class and will miss them a lot.  Enjoy your summer doing the things you love to do.  See you in the fall.  Go CUBS!!

    Ms. Ross

The following is a list of ideas and suggestions your children may wish to use to make their summer fun:

    1.       Enjoy the summer weather by doing various outdoor activities such as biking, rollerblading, swimming, walking, and etc. Try not to stay indoors watching T.V.  Instead get some exercise and fresh air.

    2.      Join one of the many sports programs that the Chicago Park District offers.

    3.      Take part in the Summer Reading Program sponsored by the Chicago Public Library.  Visit the library often and READ!

    4.      Take “mini” field trips to the many museums that Chicago has to offer.  Some have free admission on designated days.

    5.      Review all math facts so you are better prepared to begin Grade 4 in the fall.

    6.      Practice cursive writing by writing letters to friends and family members.

    7.      Travel to somewhere you never have visited.  Keep a journal of your activities and adventures.  Send us postcards.

    8.      Play board games with the entire family.  Children, teach your parents how to play a fun-filled educational game.

    9.      Build something with the help of a parent or older family member.

    10.  Read to younger siblings or ask older ones to read to you.  Complete your summer reading list and the projects you are to do.

    11.    Most of all stay SAFE and have a relaxing and fun summer!!

          Summer Reading List

Your students have grown to be great readers this year.  They gained many reading skills that will still need to be practiced over the summer.  Summer reading can bridge the end of one school year and the beginning of the next.

Students are required to choose four of the eight books listed below to read over the summer.  They will also be required to do a “Book Project” on one of the books they have chosen to read.  Students are encouraged to read more than just the books listed!  If it is difficult to find the books listed, students are encouraged to read books that are at their Guided Reading levels.

    1.      Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder

    2.    Sara, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan

    3.    Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish

    4.    any Henry and Mudge book by Cynthia Rylant

    5.    Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Mystery by James Howe

    6.    Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary

    7.    Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown

    8.    The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling

    Incoming Grade 3 Book Projects

Students are required to do one of the following “Book Projects” on one of the books they read over the summer vacation.  The students should bring in their project on the first day of school.

    1.     Diorama

Using a shoebox, create a diorama of your favorite scene from a book.

    2.     Book Jacket

Design a new cover for book on a piece of drawing paper.

    3.     Letter to the Author

After reading a book, give your reaction to the book in a letter written to the author.

    4.     Concentration

You will need 30 index cards to create a Concentration-style game related to a book.  Choose 14 things, characters, or events that played a part in the book and create two cards that have identical pictures of each of those things.  The two remaining cards are marked Wild Card!  The game can be played with a partner during school.

    5.     Character Trait Diagram

Create a Venn diagram to illustrate similarities and differences in the traits of two of the main characters in a book.  (A student might elect to create a Venn diagram showing similarities and differences between the book’s main character and the student.)

    6.     Characters Come to Life

Create life-size “portraits” of one of the characters from a book.  The portrait should include a written piece that tells about the character.  The piece might also include information about events, traits, or conflicts in the book that involve that character.
