Outside, during the past few weeks, the winter weather has been cold and blustery, but that hasn’t kept the first graders blue. The children have been as busy as ever learning new and exciting things each day.
The month began with the continuation of the Celebration of Catholic Schools Week. The children enjoyed many activities during this special time. A prayer service began our week followed by a visit to a unique Saint Wax Museum at St. Matthias Church. First grade learned a great deal about many different Saints compliments of some talented sixth and seventh graders. Student Appreciation Day was another highlight that was capped off with a special movie and popcorn treat. The first graders also welcomed a few special alumni guest speakers into the classroom. The children enjoyed listening to these individuals reminisce of their days at St. Matthias Elementary School. They also found it very interesting to learn about the jobs that these successful people have. The grand finale of Catholic Schools Week was a Mass dedicated to those that help us each day, parents. The children enthusiastically wrote special thank you letters to their parents expressing gratitude for all that they do for them. Needless to say, it was a busy week that was filled with lots of fun events.
The children completed a unit on fractions in math. They enjoyed this unit had much fun learning about equal parts. They have also continued to work on both addition and subtraction facts through 18. Their math skills are coming along well and the facts are adding up perfectly for their preparation for second grade.
Reading skills are also progressing nicely in first grade. Over the past several weeks the children have read many interesting books in the guided reading program. The children have also enjoyed reading their favorite books to their classmates during center time. This definitely adds excitement to their shared reading each day.
February, which is Black History Month, has been a focus in social studies. The children found it fascinating to learn about Ruby Bridges. Ruby was one of the first black children to attend an all white school. Ruby’s faith, courage and ability to forgive others continue to be an excellent example for us all.
Our Canadian adventure has continued over the past weeks with a focus on interesting facts about our neighbors to the north. The children can’t wait to share their knowledge about Canada with all of you at this year’s Global Fest. The 2010 Winter Olympics were a huge hit in first grade. The children were amazed to see the beautiful mountains and scenery of Canada, while watching clips of Olympic events such as skiing, snowboarding, and bobsledding. First grade was very eager to see how our fellow Americans would do in the medal standings. They even kept a close eye on Canada’s medal count too!
The first graders are looking forward to March. They are hopeful that the old saying will hold true…“If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb.” We are definitely ready for spring. The children will be participating in Stations of the Cross both at church and school during this Lenten Season. The children will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a field trip to The Old Town School of Folk Music. The Irish School of Music will not only get our feet tapping to traditional tunes of the Ireland, but also tell the stories behind them. What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! Our exploration of Canada will continue with a focus on the provinces and territories of this beautiful land.
Stay tuned to learn more about the fabulous first graders and their learning adventures!
